Why the Hilux, and Why Import Carefully

The Toyota Hilux is the gold standard for reliability in harsh conditions, but a used import can hide serious issues if you skip the basics. In China, you’ll mostly find 2015–2021 models from Japan, the Middle East, or Australia. Prices range from ¥180,000 to ¥380,000 depending on year, mileage, and grade (SR5, Invincible, or GR Sport). Before you wire any deposit, run through this checklist—every point has cost real buyers money.

1. Chassis and Frame Rust—The #1 Killer

Hilux frames are known to rust from the inside out, especially if the truck lived near the coast or was salted on winter roads. Bring a flashlight and a small hammer. Tap the frame rails from the front crossmember to the rear spring mounts. A dull “thud” means corrosion; a sharp “ring” means solid steel. Look for bubbling paint, scale, or orange dust around welds and suspension mounts. Surface rust is fine—perforation or flaking is not. Frame replacement costs ¥25,000–¥40,000 in China, and a badly rusted truck will fail import inspection.

2. Engine: DPF and Injector Health (2.8L Diesel)

Most Chinese imports are the 2.8L 1GD-FTV diesel (150–177 hp). The known weak points are the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and the high-pressure fuel injectors. Ask for a cold-start video. White smoke for more than 10 seconds on a warm engine means injector trouble. Check the DPF regeneration counter—if it shows forced regens every 300–500 km, the filter is likely clogged. Replacing a DPF costs ¥8,000–¥12,000. Injectors are ¥2,500 each plus labor. Also check the timing chain cover for oil seepage—a common leak at 100,000+ km.

3. Transmission and 4WD System

Test the automatic gearbox (A750F) through all gears, including manual mode. A hard shift from 2nd to 3rd when cold indicates worn clutch packs—rebuild is ¥9,000. Then engage 4WD on dry pavement: shift from H2 to H4 and back. Listen for grinding. Check the front differential oil for metal flakes—if it looks like silver paint, the diff is dying. Also verify the rear diff lock engages within 2 seconds (if fitted). A failed actuator is ¥3,500.

4. Suspension and Steering—Leaf Spring Sag

Hilux leaf springs sag with load. Measure the rear ride height from the top of the tire to the wheel arch. A new truck sits at 95–100 cm on stock tires. If you measure less than 88 cm, the springs are tired—replacement with aftermarket heavy-duty units runs ¥4,000. Also check the steering rack boots for tears. A leaking rack is ¥6,000 to swap.

5. Paperwork and Import Compliance

For China, you need a valid export certificate from the origin country (e.g., Japanese export certificate or UAE title), a bill of lading, and a commercial invoice. The truck must meet China’s GB emission standards—check the production date. Only Hilux built after January 1, 2018, can be registered in most Chinese cities (China VI standard). Older models are restricted to smaller cities or off-road use only. Confirm the VIN matches all documents. A mismatch means customs seizure—no refunds.

6. Mileage Verification and Maintenance History

Don’t trust the odometer. Use a diagnostic tool (e.g., Autel or Toyota Techstream) to read the true ECU mileage. Common discrepancies are 30,000–50,000 km. Also pull the oil service history if available—look for oil changes every 10,000 km or less. A Hilux with 150,000 km and no service records is a red flag; budget for a full fluid flush (¥2,000) and timing belt check (if 2.7L petrol, replace at 160,000 km—¥3,500).

7. Pre-Purchase Inspection—Get a Third Party

Never rely solely on the seller’s photos. Use a third-party inspection service in the port city (e.g., Dubai, Tokyo, or Bangkok) that can send you a 200-point report with video. Cost is ¥1,500–¥3,000. Insist on a compression test (all cylinders above 300 psi with less than 10% variance) and a smoke test for the cooling system. If the seller refuses—walk away.

Once you’ve done these checks, factor in import duty (25% of CIF value), VAT (13%), and customs clearance fees (¥5,000–¥8,000). Shipping from Japan to Shanghai is about ¥4,500–¥6,000 for a 20-foot container. Your all-in landed cost will be roughly 1.5x the purchase price.
